hello there :) I am an ESL student as well, my bachelor thesis was about idioms :D and I fell in love with them :D now I try to figure out what to pick up for my diploma thesis… I was toying with an idea of teaching methods used for teaching idioms to ESL learners… or something like that…
to elwichode1980 – you simply cannot speach proper English without idioms… you probably do not realise how many of them you use already, just have a closer look at them and you may explore a new world

Yeah these are full on british for the most part. While you won’t here them often, some of these are used like the peach or the bowl of cherries expression.

Hi. Thanks for watching and for your question. Idiomatic expressions are part of all languages and people commonly use them a lot. Students need to learn them so that they can understand native speakers. There is no obligation to use them, just an advantage to understanding them. By all means call a spade a spade, but if you know what side your bread’s buttered, you’ll go out of your way to learn as many idioms as you can or you could find yourself up the stream without a paddle.
